UPC's are an important part of offering discounts and receiving reimbursements for your scan data and loyalty programs.

UPC vs. SKU Number

UPC

  • UPC stands for Universal Product Code and is a standard number attached to products.

  • In North America, the most common type and length of a UPC is the UPC-A, 12-digit number.

  • The first 6-10 digits of a number are associated with specific manufacturers.

  • It is not uncommon for UPCs to start with leading zeros.

SKU Number

  • SKU stands for Stock Keeping Unit and is an eight-digit number that retailers assign to products internally.

💡 Tip: Making sure that your UPC's are set up correctly in your point of sale system with the correct number of digits is an important step in ensuring that your files and reimbursements are accurate.

Why are they important?

  • At Skupos, our scan data reports rely on identifying products by their UPC-A, 12-digit numbers.

What do I need to do?

  • Make sure you are using the standard 12 digit UPCs for your Tobacco products

  • Check that your UPCs are in the “Product Code” section of the POS instead of the SKU field (especially important for Clover POS)

  • Product names and descriptions match UPC
